Yikes-- how depressing to see my blog lay fallow since LAST YEAR! (So in the spirit of guilt-driven rationalization, I posted a few on our Kaw Prairie Daily Bible blog) But the big news is-- I''ve been knocked off my not-so-high bloghorse already by the growing numbers at Kaw Prairie every Sunday. Since I blogged last in December, we've grown about 100 new worshippers, from 425 up to about 525/week. And if you're a regular here at KP, you know were already playing organizational catch-up last fall anyway.
So my apologies for being so absent here--and my thanks to all the Kaw Prairiers who've been putting their toes in the water on our Daily Bible Blog, exciting the church with faithful and provocative insights!
As I sat here in the KP Cafe at 6am this morning for the 1:1 Imposition of Ashes to commuters and students, the lights were dimmed, the candles were burning, and Gregorian chants were blessing & haunting me at the same time. For a brief few hours, our usual upbeat cafe environs suddenly felt more 'serious on the inside' -- echoing with ancient praises to our living God. As I watched the sun come up through the windows, I was reminded both of the blessing of quiet time with God, and of a community of Christ-followers.
Kaw Prairiers (and non-Kaw Prairiers) filtered in for three hours-- in ones, twos, and even fours & fives-- to hear some scripture and receive an ashen, black cross on their foreheads, an ancient sign of repentance for the idolatries and false gods we worship in our daily lives. It was humbling to see so many brothers and sisters preparing for a busy workday (in which, like me, they probably won't get everything done!)--with the cross of Christ boldly on their foreheads.
Like my embarrassment this morning at seeing the 6 week-vacuum on my blog, may your self-reflection this Lent be anchored in the painful awareness of just how imperfect and disappointing our lives are before we turn them over to our perfectly fulfilling and life-giving Lord--Jesus Christ.
